Aeroflot raises salaries for captains to up to RUB 650k per month

Aeroflot has substantially increased salaries for captains of its aircraft since the beginning of 2018. The average monthly salary for captains of long-haul aircraft (Boeing 777, Airbus A330) now averages RUB 650,000 (9.247 euro), while captains of medium-haul aircraft (Boeing 737, Airbus A320 family) earn on average RUB 635,000.

Captains of at least three years standing who have flown 90 hours per month (900 hours per year) are eligible for the top-tier salary, which includes all payments including quarterly bonuses payable based on length of service and performance criteria.

90 flight hours per month is the maximum for captains at Aeroflot and in the Russian airline industry as a whole. Notably, maximum flight time hours in Europe, the US and China are higher, at 100 flight hours per month (900 hours per calendar year in the EU and 1,000 in the US and China).

Aeroflot also offers signing-on bonuses to attract qualified flight staff, with captains eligible for a one-time lump-sum payment of RUB 650,000 and co-pilots RUB 350,000. These bonuses are available to pilots not previously employed by Aeroflot, and to returning pilots if more than three years has passed since they left the airline.

Aeroflot also compensates pilots for any training-related expenses (apprenticeship agreements upon dismissal from former workplace or funds spent by the employee on their education), and offers a range of social benefits including:

  • Annual paid leave of 70 days, the most for any civil aviation workers worldwide (European airline workers receive only 28 days);
  • Private pension;
  • Voluntary medical insurance;
  • Additional special insurance programs (which received significantly increased funding in December 2017);
  • Comfortable accommodation for non-resident pilots in a pleasant district;
  • Childcare benefits for pre-school-age children;
  • Corporate transport and discounted airline tickets;
  • Free access to sports grounds for training in various sports;
  • Spa treatments (also available for children under the Healthy Child programme);
  • Use of official car parks.

Regular salary indexation and other material incentives are also offered in line with global industry practice and to give flight staff enhanced job security and social protections.
