How does a favorite get to be a favorite? Mix traditional flavors done beautifully with fond memories in a warm and welcoming setting. The whole package creates an experience that you’ll want over and over . . . and that’s what’s waiting for you at the Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia. I was happy to be hosted to experience it!

There are several different restaurants on the property — I couldn’t try them all!

The Main Dining Room has an incredible breakfast buffet with Southern specialties, local blackberries the size of your thumb, a selection of butters including tangy farm-style, a made in-house sweet butter and a local goat butter. Fresh fruits and veggies are literally pressed into service as juices and salsas. Smoked fish, house made charcuterie and a made-to-order omelette station will get you ready for whatever the day has in store for you!

Pre or post sporty activities, what’s your favorite boost? Whether it’s a coffee concoction or a freshly made green smoothie, you can pick it up at Martha’s Market.

Experience afternoon treats with a helping of elegance at The Southern Social Hour. Every afternoon at 3, the resort’s chef whips up something tasty to go along with hot or iced tea. You just know they’re showing true Southern hospitality: real iced tea spoons! A pianist plays in the background, adding to the ambiance.

When was the last time you considered dinner to be enchanting? At night, the Dining Room serves classic dishes made from the finest local ingredients — including prized tomatoes, mountain trout, Virginia ham, as well as mountain strawberries treated to a romantic rose water meringue — accompanied by a jazzy trio playing graceful arrangements of all kinds of pop tunes. Dancing on a real dance floor brings back the elegance of bygone eras for all generations.

Is total relaxation for you a great steakhouse meal where you can dress casually? Jefferson’s is cozy in decor, but still lively with a bar and open kitchen. They feature hearty, locally sourced meats. Brunswick Stew — said to have originated in the area — is authentic just like pioneer days with butter beans and rabbit. Their she-crab soup is delicate and unforgettable. Other classic dishes are beautifully done, as well. Bourbon creamed corn is “must-order”! Rich, creamy cheesecake is garnished with fresh and candied fruit.

End the evening with a nightcap! The Lobby Bar has portraits of all the sitting Presidents who also had a nightcap there. It’s clubby in front and has a popular game room in back.

In the arcade of boutiques, you’ll find a classic candy store, cookbooks and other fun taste treats.
