Wizz Air launches domestic service and establishes a new base in Norway

Wizz Air has announced its entry to the Norwegian domestic market and establishing a base at Oslo Gardermoen airport. The airlines new domestic routes connecting Oslo with Bergen, Tromsø and Trondheim will tap into over-charged oligopoly markets to offer passengers a unique experience of low fare travel and green flying on Europe’s youngest and greenest aircraft fleet.

Seats for the new routes can already be booked on wizzair.com or on the airline’s mobile app from as low as NOK 199, starting operations on 5 November 2020.

Wizz Air has carried 12 million passengers on its Norwegian route network since 2006 when the airline entered Norway. The announcement of the first domestic routes represents another major milestone in WIZZ’s Norwegian operations.

The new domestic network adds 1.5 million incremental seats to the market annually and underpins the airline’s long term commitment to bring ever more affordable and greener travel opportunities to its Norwegian travellers. With this investment Wizz Air will contribute to economic development and create hundreds of new jobs in the local job market.

Wizz Air’s domestic routes will be operated by two aircraft stationed overnight in Oslo and crew who will position to Oslo. While travel restrictions remain in force, crew will operate an extended series of domestic flight duties from Oslo and then return to their respective home bases.

Once restrictions are relaxed, crew will return to their home base after three nights in Oslo. Wizz Air is dedicated to sustainable and environmentally friendly operations.

The airline will operate its domestic Norwegian routes with its cutting edge technology Airbus A320neo family aircraft. The A320neo and A321neo have pioneered and incorporated the latest technologies, including its new generation engines and the industry’s reference cabin design, delivering 20 percent less fuel burn and nearly a 50 percent reduction in noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft.

This next-age technology aircraft enables Wizz Air to remain the greenest airline and lowest cost producer in Europe. This growth comes with the new era of sanitised travel, with Wizz Air having led the industry restart by saying ‘yes to flying’ and implementing stringent health and hygiene measures to protect passengers and crew.

Whilst the HEPA filters of all Wizz Air aircraft already filter out 99.97% of viruses and bacteria from the air, Wizz Air’s new protocols support physical distancing guidelines, ensure an ultra-clean environment on board and reduce any non-essential human interaction and physical contact, so that WIZZ passengers can feel confident that they are travelling to their destination safely.

By adding WIZZ Flex to a booking, passengers can rest assured that if circumstances change, or they simply wish to travel on a different date, or to a different destination, they can rebook on any WIZZ flight of their choice. Providing that extra layer of protection for passenger bookings, is a peace of mind during these uncertain times.

To celebrate Wizz Air’s new domestic Norwegian routes, WIZZ Flex can now be added for 1€ to all domestic Norwegian bookings made between 6-8 October 2020*.

Wizz Air is a financially stable, investment grade credit rated airline flying a fleet with an average age of 5 years, comprising of 133 most efficient and sustainable Airbus A320neo family single aisle aircraft. Wizz Air’s carbondioxide emissions were the lowest among European airlines in FY2019 (57.2 gr/km/passenger).

The airline continues to take deliveries of its order book of over 250 state-of-the-art Airbus A320neo family aircraft which will enable the carrier to sustainably run its operations on the long run and further reduce its environmental footprint by 30% for every passenger until 2030.

– I am excited to announce the start of our first three domestic Norwegian routes and the establishment of our newest base. Our low fare and high frequency services between Norway’s capital and prominent regions will give our passengers a true alternative and responsible choice. In difficult times all over the world the new WIZZ domestic network will help families keep together, boost domestic tourism and strengthen economic ties across Norway. Our young, cutting edge technology and environmental-friendly Airbus A320neo family aircraft will support sustainable and green airline operations and allow for everyday low fares to the traveling public. With our enhanced protective hygiene measures on board we welcome passengers to fly on Europe’s greenest fleet while enjoying WIZZ’s great onboard service, said József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air.

– Wizz Air’s entry confirms the attractiveness of the domestic market in Norway, also for international carriers, says Gaute Skallerud Riise, VP Traffic Development at Avinor.

– Wizz Air already have a strong position in the Avinor network, by serving 9 of our airports internationally and carrying over 1 million passengers in 2019. We welcome them and find their interest in the domestic market to be positive.”
